Around the Web: Writing Experiences, Library Animals, and Hashtags

Hey folks, I hope you've been having a fantastic week. And I hope I can make it even more fantastic with some interesting links from around the web.

Writing Outside Your Experience

There is something to the advice “write what you know,” but sometimes there are reasons you might want to write outside of your own lived experience. This should be approached with sensitivity and caution. You don't want to take opportunities from marginalized people, do harm, or cause offense. Luckily, there are folks out there who have some tips for writing cross-culturally.

Share Your Rejection

Submitting your work can be scary, so rejections can be really disheartening. #ShareYourRejection took off on Twitter this week as writers, artists, and lots of other folks, shared their experiences with rejection. These stories will make you feel like you’re not alone, inspire you to persist in your creative endeavours, and remind you that you're the most important judge of your work.

Library Animals

Maybe you’ve heard of library cats, but have you heard of library bats? Electric Lit shared 10 Animals Who Have Broken Into the Library.

Book Quiz

Who doesn’t like a little silly book quiz? This BuzzFeed quiz looks at your reading habits and tells you what kind of book nerd you are.

The Matilda Challenge

The 1996 film based on Roald Dahl’s Matilda is having a moment right now. The Matilda Challenge is the latest video trend to go viral.

Participants in the challenge dance around to “Little Bitty Pretty One” by Thurston Harris as objects “fly” around the room to recreate the iconic movie scene where Matilda embraces her powers. Matilda herself (a.k.a. Mara Wilson) even approves.

So if you’re in need of a pick-me-up, look no further.

See you next week, friends!
