Around The Web: Movies as Old Books, Raising a Reader, Motivational Notes & Publishing Heroes
Welcome back, dear readers. This week, I’m sharing a design project that re-imagines movies as old books, some tips for raising a reader, Octavia Butler’s notes to self, and some community-chosen publishing heroes.
Movies as Old Books
Who doesn’t love a good mashup? Designer Matt Stevens has brought together movies and books in a personal project that re-imagines some of his favourite films as vintage books. The results are stunning, so if you’re a film fan, you’ll definitely want to check it out.
Raising a Reader
School’s out, but that doesn’t mean kids shouldn’t be encouraged to read. The New York Public Library recently shared a few tips for raising a reader (hint: none of them involve assigning specific books).
Octavia Butler’s Motivational Notes to Self
“So be it! See to it!” These words are repeated on a page of Octavia Butler’s notebook in a passage that describes her goal of becoming a best-selling author. These notes illustrate her drive to write and her desire to help other Black writers succeed. If you’re interested in seeing more of these notes, check out Open Culture’s recent post about the award-winning author.
The Publishing Community’s Heroes
There’s a lot happening in publishing right now as bookstores and publishers deal with the pandemic. It can be a bit disheartening to see stores, writers, and presses struggle, so if you’re in need of a pick-me-up, do read the results of Quill & Quire’s request for stories of heroes in the publishing community, and remember: there are always people working to make things better.
